Hoos First Look is built on the foundation of diversity and student-self governance, in hopes of creating an awareness and understanding of socioeconomic differences in the University. As of now, there is a scarcity in recruiting socioeconomically underrepresented high school students and preparing them to apply to the University of Virginia. Moreover, there is no fly-in program in any capacity at the University, which stands out in comparison to our peer institutions that have them in place. To bridge this gap, we have created Hoos First Look.
Upon acceptance, each of the 20 students will be matched with a current UVA student who will serve as a mentor for the student, keeping in contact with them over the summer and answering any questions they may have leading up to the program. The mentor will also serve as an overnight host for the student, meaning they will provide housing during the 3 days and 2 nights.
