OUR PURPOSE

Hoos First Look is built on the foundation of diversity and student-self governance, in hopes of creating an awareness and understanding of socioeconomic differences in the University. As of now, there is a scarcity in recruiting socioeconomically underrepresented high school students and preparing them to apply to the University of Virginia. To bridge this gap, we have created Hoos First Look.

Hoos First Look’s objective is to show more high achieving, low-income/first-generation high school students that getting into a great public university is attainable. To do this, we are offering two opportunities to participate via a virtual and in-person cohort. The virtual cohort will receive programming via Zoom and is open to all applicants regardless of residency. The in-person cohort will visit Grounds (UVA’s campus) for programming and is open to Virginia residents only. Both cohorts will receive the same overall information. Our program would take place in the fall. Our program dates for the in-person cohort and the virtual cohort has not been finalized yet.

WHAT WILL THE PROGRAM LOOK LIKE?

Upon acceptance, each student in the virtual and in-person cohorts will be matched with a current UVA student who will serve as a mentor for the student, keeping in contact with them over the summer and answering any questions they may have leading up to the program. The mentor will also be available to answer any remaining questions after the program as needed.
